An engagement ring is the start of the journey of marriage; the wedding ring cements the intention. But the eternity band ring is the recognition of the ongoing unity and commitment between husband and wife. Eternity rings are possibly the most romantic symbols of love of all!
Traditionally an eternity ring is one which has at one or more rows of diamonds completely encircling the finger. The gemstones may be pave set, channel set, bar set or even bezel set, but the effect is always one of a dazzling channel of opulence! The presence of diamonds in an eternity band is essential because they are deeply symbolic of hope and purity. As the hardest known natural substance, diamonds also perfectly symbolize the strength of love and devotion between a husband and wife. And the way the diamonds completely go round the finger in a continuous circle of gemstones represents the never ending nature of the love that a husband and wife enjoy together. All of this makes an eternity ring very romantic.
However, a complete circle of diamonds can be a little out reach of some budgets. And for that reason, some people prefer to invest in a half eternity band ring. This is exactly the same as the full eternity band except that the gemstones cover only the most visible parts of the finger amounting to a third or half of the total band. The back of the ring is blank precious metal.
The diamonds set into the band ring can be any shape. However, the ones are those which can be set closely together in a pave, channel or close claw setting to maximise the impact of the diamonds. This means that round cut Brilliants and cuts with edge facets, such as Princess, Rectangular and Square cut diamonds look best.
Traditionally, eternity rings have been given whenever there is a reason to celebrate and remember the eternal nature of romantic love. Perhaps the most obvious such occasion is a wedding anniversary, and the first wedding anniversary is a particularly popular time to give an eternity band. The anniversary of the wedding proposal or the first meeting might be other suitable events.
However, there are other times too when a husband may want to make his wife feel special, such as the birth of a first child, or when the first child leaves home for college, or indeed any other marked change in the home life of the married couple. And it is also becoming very popular for couples to choose eternity bands as their engagement rings too!
