Use of Diamonds in Rings
The origin of the custom to use diamonds in rings can be traced back to the 15th century. Diamonds were commonly used in rings for a variety of reasons. Several cultures valued the diamond on account of various supernatural powers they ascribed to it. For example, Romans believed diamonds could ward off poison and insanity and dispel fear. Another belief was that a diamond ring, if worn on the left hand, could ward off evil and attract good fortune. In recent times, the use of diamonds in rings has increased dramatically, particularly in engagement rings. Regardless of what you are using a diamond ring for, when you are searching for your perfect diamond ring, be sure to consider the four C’s. The four C’s refers to four characteristics of diamonds that are commonly used to grade and certify individual gemstones. The four C’s of diamonds are cut, carat, color, and clarity.
Diamond Grading
The cut of a diamond describes the shape of the diamond. The better the proportions of a diamond, the more brilliant and sparkly the diamond will be. The best cut diamonds are those that have been cut by a master diamond cutter with exactly placed facets which create the most splendid combination of luster, beauty, and brilliance. At David & Sons, we employ only experienced master cutters. Our diamond shapes include round, princess, emerald, radiant, oval, pear, marquise, heart, asscher, and cushion. The carat of a diamond refers to the size, or mass, of the gemstone. The higher the carat , the larger the diamond, and thus, the more valuable. Typically, the color of a diamond ranges from transparent to yellow, particularly when a diamond is being used in a ring. However, on occasion, diamonds can exhibit rare natural colors. These diamonds are commonly referred to as fancy-colored diamonds and can be a rich brown hue or champagne tint. Even rarer diamond colors can include blue, green, peach, and pink. A diamond’s clarity refers to naturally occurring imperfections, or inclusions. A diamond with a high clarity grade is one with less visible, or no visible, imperfections. These diamonds are more valuable. You can learn more about the four C’s of diamonds by clicking on the 'Diamonds' heading.
