Experts in the field of gemology have developed methods of grading and certifying diamonds based on the characteristics most important to their value as a gem. The four characteristics for a diamond are known informally as the “four Cs.” The four C’s include cut, carat, color, and clarity.

Cut

diamond shapes

The cut of a diamond describes the manner in which the diamond has been shaped and polished from its beginning form as a rough diamond to its final shape. Often times, cut is also commonly referred to as shape. The better the proportions of a diamond, the more brilliant and sparkly the diamond will be. The best cut diamonds are those that have been cut by a master diamond cutter with exactly placed facets which create the most splendid combination of luster, beauty, and brilliance. As a leader among La Jolla jewelers, we employ only experienced master cutters. Historically, the most common cut of diamond is the round brilliant cut, which was first developed by mathematician and gem enthusiast Marcel Tolkowsky. Tolkowsky created a mathematical model of ideal diamond cuts. However, because of advancements in technology, Tolkowsky’s model is now superseded by GIA Facetware software that is the culmination of about 20 years of research on diamond cuts.

Carat

The carat of a diamond essentially refers to the size, or mass, of the stone. The higher the carat is, the larger the diamond. Larger diamonds are typically more valuable. A common question among ladies showing off a new diamond ring is “How many carats is your diamond?” One carat is about 200 milligrams; and five carats is equivalent to about one gram.

Color

diamond color range

In regards to color, generally diamonds contain tints of color. For most diamonds, the whiter or more transparent the diamond, the more rare, valuable, and desirable it is. However, on occasion rare diamonds of naturally occurring deeper color will appear. These diamonds are commonly referred to as fancy-colored diamonds. Some of the rare colors include a rich brown, champagne, blue, green, and peach. Pink diamonds are considered very and are priceless. Diamond colors are graded with a letter grade, for example A, B, C, and D. The finest diamonds are graded as D. These highly sought-after diamonds are free from any color. At David & Sons, we offer a variety of colors and color grades. Our available diamond colors range from D to J, in other words from transparent to yellow.

Clarity

diamond clarity

A diamond’s clarity refers to the existing or lack of existing naturally occurring imperfections or inclusions. The harder it is for a trained diamond grader to find these imperfections, the higher the clarity grade the diamond will be. The higher the clarity grade, the more valuable the diamond is. A flawless diamond, meaning one with no inclusions visible at a specific magnification, is extremely rare. The clarity of a diamond is designated by a series of letters and numbers.
