The most important feature of a ruby is its color. It is usually found in different shades of red. These shades range from pinkish to brownish-red. The color is decided by the content of iron impurities and chromium in the ruby. The color is very important in determining the price of a ruby. The deeper a shade of red a ruby has, the more expansive it will be. The brightest and most valuable ruby is the 'pigeon-blood red" ruby.

A ruby can be either faceted or may be cut. The various popular ruby cuts usually include the step cut, the brilliant cut and the mixed cut. A ruby can also be cut and polished as a cabochon.
